This book meets the NYS Social Studies Standard #4. The specific example of when the family is sitting outside in the country side enjoying nature’s beauty is definitely aided by the illustrations given. The illustrations aid the message of the story because they show how contrasting the desert, which is their home, is to what we are used to. Understanding uniqueness and the value of family is something every child I feel needs to understand by the end of elementary school and thus is why I would want to teach it.Īlthough the illustrations are hard to understand, I feel that it could be a good task for the children to try and sort through what they see. I really liked this book because it teaches something many children don’t understand easily. After sitting down with her parents and trying to put a price on all of the experiences she’s had, she soon realizes that her family is rich and that there are so many unique things they are able to do that other’s don’t have the opportunity. Complaining about the dinner table they eat at, or things they don’t get the chance to do, she feels as though other families are richer than hers. The team or person with the most points wins.A story about a young girl named Mountain Girl, who lives in the countryside with her family and feels as though her family is poor.
